I just bought a new Raymarine A series chartplotter multifunction unit with built in GPS and installed it at the helm in the cockpit. Perhaps this is a dumb question but are there simpler options to GPS enable my VHF with DSC than running a cable from the cockpit to the nav station inside the boat (where the VHF is installed)? I have a simpler blue tooth GPS unit but it won't do the trick obviously. I plan to do some serious cruising along the TX, LA, MS, AL, and FL Gulf coasts and would like to have the DSC safety feature.

Running the wires is the "simplest" answer from a technical standpoint. It may not be simple to run the wire but hooking them up is not complex. If you try to use some wireless kludge it will likely not be reliable. You want DSC to be bullet proof.

Running wires to the nav station from the helm on a beneteau is one of the easier tasks in all of boat ownership.

Having said that, as long as your running wires, run some more for ais from the radio to the helm......I can almost guarantee you it'll be your next upgrade once you start motoring the ICW.
