Gloves

hey folks,

it is unseasonably cold here in Vancouver, Canada right now, seeing temperatures well below freezing - I know that's nothing to some of you, so that's why I'm asking here.

I picked up three pairs of fingerless grey wool gloves, and rotate through them regularly, rinsing them in fresh water and hanging them to dry when they get soaked with saltwater, etc. they've been pretty much fine until now.

I'm looking for the perfect pair of cold-weather gloves - they need to be warm and dry, and go easily from the sailboat to the rowboat to the bicycle and back.

what do you use when the weather turns (way too) chilly?

Re: Gloves

While I have all sorts of ice climbing and ski gloves I could use, these are among my favorites:
POWER-GRAB HI-VIS THERMO GLOVES - Division of KARTCO LLC
I picked them up at a commercial fishing store (Sea Gear), but I don't think they carry them anymore.

They are not fully waterproof, but they are warm, dry fast, have major grip, and are cheap enough to have a few. Great for hauling anchors and the like in winter.

Some more winter ideas:

Re: Gloves

Drew23. I have a couple of pairs of "ski" gloves I use as well as a pair of West Marine "winter" gloves. The ski types keep your hands warm but are not very good for fine work.

Re: Gloves

In Toronto, we don't sail in the winter...water's too stiff...but I use Mountain Co-op bicycle gloves with a Thinsulate woolen fingerless "flip top" glove over that in late season sailing, or, if it's cold rain, a knobbly rubberized utility glove with the fingers cut out at the first joint.

Works for cycling on all but the coldest days.

Re: Gloves

I just use regular knit gloves. When I need them waterproof, I put nitriles over them.

It looks bummy, but it is cheap and highly effective. The nitriles disappear in a pocket, and are totally waterproof. You won't hesitate to get them all messed up, either.

Re: Gloves

Isn't this weather lousy? I use a really good pair of lined leather work gloves. Real tough so they don't wear out on the oars or lines. I work at keeping them dry. I always have a lot of cheap work gloves around for anchoring or other things where they might get wet and muddy and rotate through them.
