Re: Fitness

When the weather outside is just too unbearable, I have resorted to riding my bike on rollers, in the basement, in front of the television. Occasionally, I have this daydream about somehow rigging up the bike in the cockpit of the boat, with some kind of connection to the prop shaft. Or maybe just the alternator. Get a decent leg workout and some useful energy recovery at the same time. One caution though - the volume of sweat on stationary rollers can be incredible. Probably have to run the water maker an extra hour, which would use up the extra energy... Oh well. There ain't no free lunch.

One job up the mast solo is a good work out because you will invariably forget/drop/ not bring, the right tool with you the first three times up. Ok maybe four....

Re: Fitness

You guys are thinking too small. When my wife get 5 ft itis we window shop larger boats. I’ve seen, on bigger sailboats, treadmills and a stationary bike ensuite. The strangest though was a rowing machine. Artificial rowing while on a boat has to be a case of too many dollars and not enough sense.

Like tanning beds in Hawaii. Or driving the car to the gym to ride a stationary bike....

I went from almost 190 pounds to 174 and looked thinner.

It can become an addiction.....

I did get to upgrade to a nice Titanium Dura-Ace Litespeed Vortex 10 speed though. We cyclists mess around with our bikes, its adjustments, and their components every bit as much as a sailor/cruiser does with his boat

Btw, I paid $3,300.00 for my used 2004 Litespeed Bicycle and $2,000 for my used sailboat.

Looks good but at 60 plus, I'm not looking for shortcuts.

If I can just get in a 2-3 mile run once or twice a week (or a bike ride) plus pushups, pullups, and 20-30 minutes in the gym at work I'm happy

A bit of stretching before any exercise helps also.

Some more of the best arm strengthening exercises are the arm exercises that male gymnasts do:

More secrets that doctors know about the correct way to train the body and that they don't tell.

Don't forget to do rotator cuff exercises:

Re: Fitness

...& I remember a time in the 80ies when each evening (never during daylight if there were other boats in the anchorage...) I did 1000 situps on the deck of our Wharram...

And the Hitachi Magic Wand muscle massager for when the delayed onset muscle soreness hits and your brain is saying, "do more training", but your body is saying, "no, relax!!"

"Do more training" wins! *\o/*
