Exercises while cruising?

Shore-side is easy, but how do you keep fit while aboard either underway or at anchor?

Re: Exercises while cruising?

Well we never have had any type of roller furling! That in it's self gives ya a good workout!! also we always have done All of the work on our boats and when ya cruise for months on end, the phyiscal work your body go's thru, just from the boat moving and your body constantly adjusting to the boat even when ya sleep !! has always kept me in fair shape, I think it's one of the things thats kept me being able to still sail at my age !Im always worse off ashore ! it's hard to keep any type of secdual ashore but at sea all falls in place for us ! just our 2 cents

Re: Exercises while cruising?

I see Vogue goes sailing again. I met a very fit couple on a steel boat that merely practice Yoga. No need for bells, whistles or funky exercise products.

So, that's your answer? Your advice to the OP?

Mike and Rebecca owned a couple of businesses (which they sold) before going cruising.

Martial Arts Planet, The Top choice for Fitness and Martial Arts Training and Instruction in Kingston Ontario

North Pole Fitness

StrengthPLUS!

They are very active onshore as well, but that wasn't the question. The TRX looks really worthwhile, whether on the boat, or ashore. Maybe we can add Yoga to that? I liked the pole dancing better.

Just part of it...the other was Yoga which does not involve any apparatus. It's great that they can make money and go cruising.

Re: Exercises while cruising?

No roller furling, no windlass, no davits, and no crew (although I'm looking).

Re: Exercises while cruising?

Add the roller furling, windlass, and davits...and you'll be more attractive to crew!

great glute workout, particularly when wearing a water soaked fleece

If you did pushups, crunches (ugh), one legged squats (lean on the mast lest it become an aquatic event), and pullups with a loop ended halyard/ topping lift (back to the mast) you'll have a good full body workout. Swimming for some aerobic efforts and you'll be wondering why you wasted so much money on that cone clutch windlass. You might even be able to step and unstep the mast yourself

Re: Exercises while cruising?

If there are 2+ of you on the boat: be dragged behind the boat while motoring and exercise. Details:

1. Work out hand signals for faster, slower, good speed, stop now.
2. Trawl a longish line with a loop at the end for safety.
3. Get mask and snorkel.
4. Stop the boat.
5. Drop swimming ladder, jump in the water, hold on to the ladder.
6. Sign to the helmsman to go faster until desired tension is reached.
7. Do pull-ups, core twists, "squats", leg raises, etc. on the ladder.
8. Signal when to stop.

Amazing work out, no need for weights, and a lot of fun. If you can see the bottom, also a free aquarium show.

Re: Exercises while cruising?

I don't do any passage making so can't speak to that. When at anchor in the islands, I do lot's of snorkeling, lobstering, swimming and beach walking which accounts for more exercise than I typically get at home.

Power 90 can be done in the salon, as can yoga.
