Do you pee over the side?

Once I'm away from the marina, and out of easy sight of other boats, when I need to pee, I pee over the side.

I've always done this.

Of course I'm not going to pee in front of guests, or the ladies, but usually I'm alone, or with just my kids.

I recently asked a sailing friend who also has his own boat, and he always goes below to the head, no matter what.

So, am I the only one?

I live/sail on Lake Ontario, where holding tanks are required and used by all vesels. Its not a monetary thing, but by peeing overboard, I only need to pump-out once a year. Also, when I'm alone, leaving the deck, even for a minute, is a bad idea.

And what about if I'm anchored and swimming. Is it ok to just pee while I swim? Am I supposed to get out, towel off, and go to the head like I'm at a public swimming pool? And by extension...what about #2 ?

I sling it over my shoulder.....and then pee over the side. I find I get better control that way.

Nope. I'm going to stay away from this one entirely.

It's not actually true that most MOB victims are found with their flies open.

There is, however, a grain of truth in it.

Word to the wise.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

Yes and on the floor too. Horrified? when we were diving off the rib and one of the lads wanted to go I told him to pee on the floor rather than risk going out the back of the boat with a drysuit undone. Also there would be so much salt water sloshing around during diving operations that a wee bit of pee isn't going to be a problem.

If you can't afford the time away from the cockpit and its rough then pee in the cockpit, a bucket of salt water or two when you get home will sort it if the spray doesn't. If its calm kneel on the seat lean on the pushpit and just do it, kneeling means the pushpit keeps you inboard.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

Yes I do. On a passage when my partner is down below I simply cannot walk by without waking her up as the head is fore and adjacent to our bunks.

In extreme cases I did too in the marina middle of the night horizontal rain and 500 yards to the facilities block. I should not have but the question is not what we shouldawoulda but what we do. Hence my (too) honest answer.

Indeed, and why else did God make cockpit drains?

Some racers even rig up those, whatever they're called, which military pilots use.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

Only in calm water. If there are people around I duck below and pee into an old bean can and empty that overboard. Much easier than pumping the head. (Just make sure there are no jagged edges on the rim of the can!!)

Regards,
Richard

Quite, those drains are there to get rid of water when its rough, which will do nicely for other fluids. Actually tea is probably worse as it stain white GRP instantly and being English tea is essential.

Oh, really? So they're dual purpose? I didn't think about the sea water.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

When offshore I rigged a funnel with a long flexible spout zip tied to the push pit that worked great, one of the crew recommended a cigarette butt in it for something to aim at

Re: Do you pee over the side?

Sure. I've had ladies pee over the side too. Wouldn't do it when it's rough. but here it's pretty dang placid.

Semi-related: On ski boats out at Havasu/Mohave, you'll often see everybody but the person driving the boat jump off when the boat stops to pick up a skier. Why? #1, it's freakin hot out there. #2, they all need a wee.
