One of the advantages of the open transom boats, a very comfortable and safe peeing position. On bad weather you don't even have to lose your jack line from the position used on the steering wheel station:just turn around and do it (I mean offshore). The life lines are higher than your waist.

Agreed.
What should be noted is that most MOBs happen during fair weather. Thats when the guard is down and people are more relaxed about safety. However, usually, the person is recovered quickly and the only damage is a bruised ego.

In poor conditions, people tend to be a little more white knuckled as they move around the boat. So MOBs are somewhat rarer, though they do have more dire consequences when they do occur.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

Lots of good information...thank you to everyone who replied.

Apparently its not quite as controversial as "feet to bow", but there are some strong feelings on both sides.

The consensus is that no waste goes overboard as a matter of environmental correctness, especially on a fresh water lake which is used as the drinking water source for millions of people, some of them American.

And yet a few of us older men (and one woman) hold on to this act of rebellion against civility.

Also, it seems that some poor souls are cursed with such a long penis that it is not practical to do this, except in very deep water of reasonable temperature. Although, I have to wonder if they are actually exaggerating to compensate for having a small sailboat.

Ann, if you took that photo as sexist in any way, then blame modern culture, not me. That is the headrig of the tallship Lady Washingrton, official tallship of the State of Washington. That is the part of a boat that men and many women have been "doing their business" from for hundreds of years.

I used that particular photo because it was one of the few I could find that shows a proper headrig, and because it's one that I have personally utilized for its intended purpose. I guess I could have posted photos of the heads I have used on other ships, but I would have probably run the same risk of offending lovers of wildlife, because their figureheads were eagles, or human rights activists because the figureheads were of American Indigenous Peoples, or maybe nihilists because many ships carry no figurehead at all.

We're supposed to be having fun here. Lighten up, Miss Snarky pants!

Re: Do you pee over the side?

I don't know, Dockhead. Back when wearing a PFD would get you called a Nancy Boy, I'm pretty sure I saw a statistic that a majority (not all, not most, but more than half) of all MOB's found by the USCG had their zippers down.

Do you have proof otherwise? Or am I going to have to ask the Commandant?

Whenever possible, anything aboard a small boat should perform as many functions as possible. Here I present the cockpit toilet that even the fairer sex can use, if they so choose:

Well, we tend to empty them after each use when sharing. And using for #2's is definitely discouraged.

Having said that, they are indeed large and small sizes available. We keep both a small and large one in the cockpit locker because they nest together.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

My ex was able to stand up like a man and whiz overboard very easily. Just dropped her drawers, arranged her feminine parts and let it fly. Must admit I still think about her rear end at times. She was European and certainly nor shy! As a matter of fact, I think she was a bit of a show off!
Whether she was anatomically different, can't say... certainly not that I noticed. She was one hell of a sailor but the grog did us in, unfortunately. Now live with a health nut and should live to 105! Phil

Okay, I'll lighten up enough to explain: The mental image I got from the picture you posted, along with your written comment was that of urine and fecal matter drenching the figurehead, which represents womenkind. That was why I was snarky. If yours was an innocent posting, i apologize.

I keep a bucket in the cockpit. It has a line attached for rinsing out.
