Decision to Make

So I just got an offer to crew on a delivery from Bermuda to St Thomas on a FP38. I am friends with the owner and current crew so this is a fairly good chance for me to get some offshore delivery time under my belt in a somewhat familiar/comfortable environment. It is the other variables that are making me a bit nervous. Can you guys tell me a bit about the weather conditions I might encounter on that leg at this time of year? About how long will that leg take? What are some of the things I should consider before agreeing to go?

Sheesh what's up with this forum? I feel like it is getting harder and harder to get your posts responded to?

Re: Decision to Make

Ha ha...I would kind of call it an inexperienced capt and crew. Ironically the crew are captains and the owner...well he's just an owner. They made this trip last year and they have completed the first leg from Annapolis to Bermuda this year. I believe that is the extent of their offshore experience. That said I trust the other crew member as someone who is absolutely fantastic on the water with more coastal sea time than most people on the Forum. I also trust myself as being pretty amazing in general...where are my emoticons?

Re: Decision to Make

I would go as long as the decider (owner?) is not locked into a schedule and is willing to wait for a proper weather window.

From Bermuda you are not totally immune but you are south of most of the worst weather and will be getting fiurther away every day.

Re: Decision to Make

The hard part is getting TO Bermuda this time of year.

As boatman said, leave with a decent weather window and you'll be more than fine. It's about 850 nm to Charlotte Amalie. Depending on what the Bermuda High is doing you'll likely see some light winds for a couple of days, so you'll need to factor that into your miles per day calculation. My guesstimate would be 6 to 7 days for the trip.

Re: Decision to Make

Well it sounds like they got local crew for this trip so I am out. Before that happened I had a PM session with my friend, the other crew member, who confessed to me that he was planning on leaving the boat too because the owner was such a mess. How do you like that? The guy tries to convince me to crew on a boat that he is leaving for safety reasons. What a great friend. Sheesh.
