IMHO, the important risk metric is the fatality rate per ocean crossing attempts.

If 5000 yachts cross the Atlantic per year and there are 3 or 4 founderings and 5 fatalities come out of the founderings or by other accidents at sea then the fatality rate is 100 per 100,000 crossings. BTW, I am making up these numbers, back of the envelope calculations.

If one talks about avalanche fatalities there are roughly 25 skier deaths per year in North America (12 this year in the US.) Numerically all happen in the back country where, I a making this up, 0.0001 percent of the skiers participate.

100 per 100,000 ocean crossings is a high fatality rate even when compared to death rates by guns. With these numbers you have an ~25 times greater risk of dying crossing the ocean then you do getting killed in a shooting in the US.

My sense is a much greater risk in each backcountry skiing excursion than getting killed by a gun or drowning crossing the Atlantic.

All that said, crossing the Atlantic in a yacht carries a substantial risk.

The ocean crossing risk can be mitigated by having a well found yacht, crossing in the right months, and using a serious approach to preparation and safety.

Lots of friendly snakes on the harbour wall. With scuba students I always found it best to pick them up and show the students they were not a issue to be around.

we got the same in South Africa. I think that it's us that should be protected against the Groupers now. One nearly drowned me a while ago.
They are stunning animals. I see on some wrecks, even the Zambezi (Bull) sharks are wary of them.
