The reason I posted the Tustumena story was that I thought the lesson was rather clear cut. It isn't entirely clear what happened to the clammers, and we likely won't ever know for sure. Early on, there were conflicting reports about how many were (or were not) wearing PFDs. However, for anyone who is interested, here is the best account I've seen:

) the family
lived nearby and often boated on the lake. Like the clammers, familiarity with the environment
may have led them to be less cautious.
