Seeing as how I don't intend to be anywhere near that corner of the globe during this lifetime, I don't feel threatened at all. Why Westerners sail those waters is beyond my comprehension.

Is that really a surprise?

Not everyone in Africa lives in a mudhut and even those that do sometimes have WIFI

The keys here are simple: Do not announce your route. Do not post information about places you've been until you are some distance away from it. Do NOT placate your relatives using SPOT Messenger. Fine going to the Caribbean, sure, why not...fine doing Halifax-Cork, but they are just going to have to wait for the postcards, old school style, rather than posting a freakin' INTERACTIVE MAP of your last position. Might as well change the name of the boat to "Sitting Duck".

Pretend that the Internet is one big party line, like the VHF, and conduct yourself accordingly.

One of the joys of cruising is that, short of activating an EPIRB, nobody knows, or needs to know, your location. You go when you go, and show when you show.

A long time back I lived on a houseboat for a few years... wish I'd thought of that name

Yes, that would work, as would "Hull of a House".
