Australian Sailboat Safety Gear

I'm setting up my Spacesailer 20, a 6.2m sailboat, with the required safety equipment and need to know what I have to have to be compliant.

I am setting up for 'offshore' compliance as I expect to do some minor offshore coastal sailing.

What do I need?


- PFDs (I Have)
- Anchor and chain (I Have)
- 4 Flares (2 Day & 2 Night)
- Fire Extinguisher (Size?, A-B-C Type?)
- V-Sheet (Best Source?)
- EPRIRB
- Safety Label (How do I determine the 'maximum number of people to be carried'? Is there an alternative to the table on the back of the Decal?)
- VHF/HF Radio

- Bilge Pump (Manual or Electric)


Where is a good source for these items? I have used BCF to buy some items, but their prices are not always the best.

In Australia, the required safety equipment is state legislated. Presumably your boat is registered in NSW, if so, here are their requirements -
