Arms on Board?

is there any specific requirements for having weapons on board a boat? I own a 7.62x54 Mosin bolt action sniper rifle, moss berg 500 pump tactical, 45 cal colt 1991 commander, a couple of machetes, knives, and one vintage katana (a gift from a very close friend. its a real one, but I use it for ornamental purposes. its not a deal breaker, but I'd just like to know what general opinion about that sort of thing is

Rather than having fixed weight in the keel, I use sandbags. The benefit here is that I can load them into the cockpit giving me a defensible firing position at the same time greatly increasing my roll period, thereby making me a much harder target to hit.

I don't have one yet, but planning to either sail or have my boat shipped to lake guntersville AL for a couple of years, then probably going to do some cruising on the US east coast

haha, believe me, if the boat would support it I would do my level best to give it the firepower and defense of a battleship

A steel Danforth is best - upended can use it as a shield / firing point.

or as body armour.

Yeah sorry for the prick-ish response but basically it goes like this:

90% of people doing international sailing don't have guns onboard because:
a) they're illegal in many countries you'd visit
b) the ratio of "screwed by having a gun" is much greater than "saved by having a gun"

5% of people hide one, which also means you can be screwed if one is found, like years in some random country's prison

5% of people having floating arsenals and avoid countries that won't allow them in and go through the hassle with the other countries.

These are numbers I've found. I was in the Navy and in the US I always had a pistol next to us in the v berth. I grew up around firearms and am completely comfy with them. But it's not the US out here, each country has its own rules, and the math is clearly on the side of those who aren't armed.

I'm leaving this thread because it will devolve into a s-storm and get locked soon.

I have been advised that in countries where the guns have to be checked in and retrieved before you leave that you from the same place you checked in at and within 24 hours. That can be a problem if you check in at the north end of a country and travel south and want to leave from the south end and continue on. Also, waiting for a good weather window can blow the 24 hr. thing. Just sounds like a real pain for travelling.
