Re: Armed Boardings in Venezuela

The gloom and doomers, sky is falling crowd really crack me up. It reminds me of a time years ago when a couple of JW,s came to my door one morning. Telling me the " end was near" " the world is getting so bad". I spent the next 5 minutes pointing out how things are so much better world wide then la hundred years ago. They walked away shaking there heads. Clueless drones.

Re: Armed Boardings in Venezuela

Sad story. Being aware is important. Over the past 30 years, yet especially the past 15, the world has become a much more dangerous place. I refuse to go anywhere near the Red Sea, Suez Canal, and Somalia. In fact, all of North Africa and much of the Eastern Indian Ocean is now on my "No go" list. Modern day privacy is a real concern. Of all the things that concern me, please guess which of the following has me truly nervous:

1) Whales
2) Lost shipping containers
3) Heavy seas
4) A broken rudder
5) Armed criminals boarding my vessel

Sail safely, and carry a big stick. And don't be afraid to use it.

Me too, especially since he mocked the entry of Denmark on my list and we had the terrorist attacks since then in... yes, in Denmark.

I guess my list isn't such nonsense after all, unfortunately.

I don't think that terrorism on the high seas is a laughing matter, nor do I think that the criminals are selecting by nationality. You might wish to investigate the situation somewhat more deeply, or you may not. Your decision.

Direct from the chief of the FBI's International Violent Crime Unit:

"Janelle Miller: We have—not just the U.S. government, but other governments—have been able to positively reduce the number of piracy cases due to their security. So when the pirates approach the vessel, armed security guards on the vessels engage the pirates in the water and do not allow them on the vessel."

That works just fine for me! Pump-action 12-gauge shotgun, Glock 9mm, lots of ammo, and the wisdom to utilize all when necessary. Your nautical miles might vary. Have a nice day.

Surely you are joking, but about people murdered by terrorists? That would be sick.

We were talking about countries that have become less safe and I listed a bunch that you were calling nonsense. You are wrong but you will turn and twist words until you think you're right, still laughing it off. Hope you may laugh a very long time, but I'm a bit more cautious about my safety.

I would think since the increase of piracy on the high seas which means anywhere within a thousand miles of a coastline, I would think it is now time for boaters to have a talk with people like the FBI, Government Officials including UN Officials and lobby for an international convention covering the carrying of protective arms for all sea going craft. Not just the cargo ships.

I totally agree with you. What I think is those who want to minimise any talk of dangers or threats on board a boat are the same anti gun extremists he jump down anyone's throat the moment the subject of defending yourself comes up. I'm not wanting to be rude or unkind but I do think some people live in a fantasy world that is built around their beliefs rather than being realists and acting according to reality.

To think that everything is hunky dory in the world and we need not worry is pretty extreme thinking in my view.

Not sure how this fits in the conversation, butMaduro announced yesterday that he will require all US citizens to get visas in advance before visiting Venezuela. No announcement about how to go about doing that, This will certainly affect US cruisers down in that neck of the woods.

It has been reported that the Venezuelan Coast Guard/Navy have been stopping and boarding a lot of boats recently. So now we don't just have to look out for civilian pirates but now we also need to look out for government pirates.
