Any suggestions for headphones?

We cruise our sailboat and are comfortable with the routine decibel levels under sail and the 40HP auxiliary. Now, we've bought a Tiarra 31 with twin 300 HP diesels to cruise up the Atlantic ICW. It's a bit louder than we are used to. Does anyone use noise canceling headphones with an intercom and bluetooth for an iPod stereo. I've been surfing to find something that might work and have only turned up expensive intercoms for aircraft. We'd like to enjoy a bit more quiet under power and be able to talk without having to make a phone call to one another. Any suggestions, besides earplugs?

You can try Sony WH-1000XM2 in airplane mode. You will not hear engines (or very little of) but conversation gets through pretty clearly.

Additional soundproofing makes a big difference. In my boat I can have a normal conversation directly over 2 Detroit Diesels at full throttle. And I don't hear well.

Friends of ours have Eartech and they swear by them. We have head phones but are switching to Eartech

+1 on the Sena. We got ours for cockpit to anchor comms. In bad conditions. They are very versatile.

Re: Any suggestions for headphones?

On our trip north from SF to Vancouver Island in 2016, my son asked me why I don't wear 'phones to listen to "my old geezer music." I explained that I MUST be able to hear all the grunts and groans the boat and engine makes (we motored all the way except for the last sail on the very last day!). It is a safety issue for me.

We have a headphone set for anchoring that has been very useful and eliminates stressful yelling - but these don't quiet the engine noise. We can hear fairly well with earplugs, but without a music soundtrack. Thanks - we will check out Sena among the other options helpful cruisers have posted.

I am too cheap to buy expensive headphones. I have some Bluetiger headphones I bought for $20 and have used for years. Granted not Bose but work great for me. Get two pair and with two iphones you can use as intercom as well. Ebay for $19.99.

If you are interested in the SENA headsets - they offer cheaper models than the SPH10 -- and you can buy them about 40% less than Amazon at Rocky Mountain ATV website. good people there and lots of headset intercoms to browse (the site is specialized for motorcycle people)

Has anyone tried using two iphones with an intercom app? I assume the idea is to connect the iphones to each other via bluetooth and connect each iphone to a headset using bluetooth. My limited research has lead me to the intercom app Modulo PTT Walkie Talkie (free app available for android and iphone) but have been unable to trial it with our iphones yet (technical hitch pairing the 2 iphones ) But am hoping someone has already found an intercom app that works - meaning that it enables reliable hands free (not PTT) duplex communication.

YOU might take a look at bone conductive headsets. They allow you to listen to music without others hearing and since it doesn't cover or plug your ears you can listen to your surroundings. Many quality units are water resistant or water proof.
