Any Cruisers Carry a Gas-Powered Water Pump On Board ?

With 16 months to go and counting, I am making my wish lists.

Does anyone carry a gas powered (salvage) water pump and hoses with them?

As I have a smaller boat, I doubt I will bring one.

I will have a large bilge pump with hose and 25' of wire.

As I am in the marine towing and salvage bizz, (TowBoatUS), these are standard tools we carry.

Just wondering....

The boaters I know that do, use a cheapie gas generator available from most auto parts stores or Harbor Freight,, coupled up with an electric sump pump, also bought from Harbor freight.
Fumes are the biggest concern.

No...have met many cruisers on our circumnavigation (3/4ths complete).

I know one fellow who has a compact Honda gas powered dewatering pump. I'm not sure what I would give up to make room for such a thing.

I know of one guy who had one. I think he said it is on the bottom of the southern ocean.

We do not carry a gas powered water pump, but we do have a diesel generator. I would suppose that anyone with a generator and a high gpm electric pump essentially has the same.

If you have room to mount it -- I always liked this idea of a prop-shaft mounted emergency pump

Fast Flow Emergency Bilge Pump

I have no experience with it.

We have a 'crash pump'. A T on one of the intake hoses from the main. If a lot of water is coming in, we can close the raw water intake and suck straight from the bilge. Basically a 500 hp bilge pump.

Re: Any Cruisers Carry a Gas-Powered Water Pump with Them ?

The cost of the Chinese knockoff gas powered water pumps is really cheap. Way cheaper than a crash pump mounted on the engine. Since you aren't going to use the thing except maybe once, I'd worry about it actually starting when you needed it. Comparing the volume it can de-water vs the costs of similar electrical bilge pumps and engine or shaft add-ons, it is hands down a winner. Just will it work?
