A Damn Mouse

Pretty sure we've got a rodent onboard. Heard him scurrying about, found a little mouse turd, then saw a couple food containers accessed. Most everything is in tough plastic but the two easy victories it managed to score.

Buying traps tomorrow.

I hear peanut butter works well to bait the traps.

Re: a damn mouse

I've got a RatZapper that works well. It's a bit costly at $40 but keeps on working until they are all gone and unlike poison you don't have bodies decaying where you can't get to them.
kind regards,

Re: a damn mouse

You undoutedly have a rat. Do not use rat poison or your new guest(s) will find a final resting place somewhere deep in the recesses of your boat. Get a couple of rat traps with peanut butter or a soft cheese for bait. They like to come out at night when you're asleep or away from the boat. If your staying in a marina, get out or get used to your new guests. They're almost impossible to keep off your boat if they're residents of the marina. Find a nice anchorage and say goodbye to your new friends. You have nothing to be gained by their friendship. Good luck and good sailing.

No chance on moving to an anchorage for a bit, but I'd love to. Pregnant wife due in two months and a two year old to boot. Probably going to be stuck in this marina through the summer (hurricane season).

And I'm hoping a mouse not a rat. Much less gross to look at.

I've got two adhesive traps and two mechanicals waiting for it tonight. It's little rodent life will be over shortly.

Re: a damn mouse

Mice are dumb and rather easy to trap. Rats, not so easy as they are quite smart and act like the Borg on Star Trek, where they keep learning and get increasingly difficult if not impossible to trap. For a rat, set multiple traps and make sure you get him on the first attempt. Raw bacon and thick sticky prune jelly works the best. Also for rats, make sure you tie the bait to the trap trigger and secure the trap to something that won't move.

If you set the trap and later find the bait missing but the trap not sprung... You've now got an enlightened rat. It's more likely you have a rat, and for that you'll need a rat Specific trap. Good luck.

Re: a damn mouse

My boat is on the hard in the woods and the mouses have become a big headache as it gets colder. I'm a very non violent type of guy but when they moved into the sail locker and turned the main into a composting head it was war. The last straw was when I found 2" of the insulation chewed off the wire inside the isolation transformer.

Traditional snap traps with peanut butter have done well. Caught four in the last few weeks. One was just caught by the tail so I took pity and road tripped him to the deep woods and let him go. If he comes back, no pity.

Maybe try peas, cornbread and greens for the north FL country mice?
