In regard to the Peanut butter - I too had a couple of empty traps , I found that smearing it under the bait trigger worked (it only needs half a nudge ).

My success has been with the large hinged type sticky ones with a wooden frame around it. …Only put the bait in the center wooden spine. when it gets caught on one side it struggles and pulls the other side on top so it can't move

Caught a huge one that way after trying the smaller one sided sticky traps.

The Subic Rat didn’t like Peanut butter, but got him first night with anchovies.

My trick is to wire a small piece of bacon onto a snap trap and coat it in peanut butter. Juvenile rodents often get caught with just peanut butter or cheese, but big rats get that way from learning the art of licking the bait off the trap. Once they lick the pbutter off my traps, they can't resist the temptation to take a tug at the bacon.

Tethering the trap prevents it from being dragged somewhere inaccessible.

Any trap needs to sit in place several days before most rats will come into the baits.

Snap traps are dangerous to small children, but kids will make a bigger mess with a sticky trap.

Last night report: no movement on any of the traps, no sounds, no noises. I'll see if I can pick up some bacon today and then I'll wire it onto the traps. I've got at least a dozen snap traps laid out in different sizes, and then two baited sticky traps.

Catching rats has a lot in common with fishing. Baits, tackle, knots, time of day, placement, etc. I guess when you get right down to it it's basically the same thing: get the animal to bite something sufficient enough to get snagged on a device.

This is possible, but not likely. And, if you are in a marina with a vermin problem, the fact that one might have left does not mean that his mother, father, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, acquaintances, soon to be friends . . . are not far behind. The only way to stop the problem is move out on the hook where Senor Raton cannot swim to shore and he will be forced to eat your bait or do the Macarena on the sticky paper to the point of exhaustion and/or death. No matter how scrupulous you have been in sealing your boat from Rodentia Mexicanus, you won't keep them out. Remember, the rodent family is over 65 million years old dating back to the Paleocene. That's a pretty strong case for survival. The lowly hominids have only been around for 4-6 million years and Homo Sapiens (modern Man) about 250,000 years. How do you think the bookies in Vegas would call these odds?

No worries. I asked our exterminator about the poison when the outdoor poison rat traps were set at our place. He said that cats and dogs won't eat rats which are already dead from the poison. And birds of prey, will not ingest enough of it to be a health threat to them. The chemical is concentrated in just a couple vital rat organs. Also, dogs and cats won't be attracted to the poison cubes, not something they'd be interested in consuming.
