Re: a damn mouse
Not really to hard to make up rat gardes for your lines ! But that won't stop a warf rat from getting a board cus most of us are way to close to the docks it keep em from jumping up on your decks! Hell they swim better then most folks ! Ya need big rat traps and pork or fish to get em !! We have had to change from spring traps to live traps just cus they quit going to the spring traps!! Most of the rats in the worlds ports are of Norwegian Warf rat background, we have seen 2 of them in agana Guam head and tail a german sheapard dog!! They can get big and are sure smart and mean !!

Two sticky traps and one mechanical are set. I'd much rather have a snake.

There are other creatures that might be worse to have on board:

Re: a damn mouse
We used to have mice in our house regularly. Aside from trying to plug any holes we could find with steel wool...etc, we also installed the following in the basement (main point of entry) and in our attic (another place we'd hear them). Since, we have had them.
Amazon.com: Victor M754 Mini PestChaser Ultrasonic Rodent Repellent, 4-Pack: Patio, Lawn & Garden
Assuming you are on shore power, they won't penetrate walls, but if can put them in a place where it covers the entry point(s) and maybe even outside to keep them of the boat somehow, it might work. Not sure how feasible it is to use them on your boat, but figured it's worth a mention.

Re: a damn mouse
Tie a piece of line to the trap and secure the bitter end. I have had rats aboard in San Diego, which come down the dock all the way to the end tie. Once they get aboard and get caught in a trap, they are capable of dragging the trap a fair distance. Only the lucky ones get their necks broken by the spring trap. Most of the others just get stuck in the trap and want to drag it around and make a mess.. Peanut butter is king!

In Hawaii we used Peanut Butter for mice and rats. It seem like Heroin for them

Or crack. I've had a rat crawl over the body of one of his fellows in a trap to get to the peanut butter in the second trap. They just can't help it.

I suppose lawyers don't count ( sorry to all the lawyers on the forum. I am told they mostly like lawyer jokes)
When camping a few years ago a friend who was sleeping next to me in sleeping bag had his nose bitten by a rat. It was a serious wound, so I have no illusions that they are harmless.
(Note to Rebel Heart don't let Charlotte see this post )
Anyway, it second hand information, but I am assured the sticky traps work best. Apparently the rats roll around when they first get stuck effectivly wrapping themselves up.
One cruiser was so horrified we didn't have a sticky trap on board that he rowed over the next morning and gave is one. The guidebooks warn to always have plastic bottles around shore lines at certain islands.

3am and no noise from the rat, no action on any of the three traps scattered around. Didn't have any peanut butter but I'll go into town and score some tomorrow. I'll pop the sails open too and make sure the little bastard hasn't taken up residence in there.
I'd at least like to hear the damn thing so I know it's still here.

Ensure its Organic peanuts with the peanut oil retained not removed and replaced with vegetable oil. You just stir the oil in and its much better for your mouse with Omega 3 for his fur - really makes it shiny, and natural anti oxidents for vascular health because he only has a teeny-weeny little heart. Also ensure he gets plenty of fibre.

Re: a damn mouse
Another thought is make sure its a rat. Some years ago on a visit to Sri Lanka I had warned about rats because the risk of rabies. My rabies immunisation was a bit suspect and I was sleeping on the floor, with lots of holes on the wall (real 5 star accommodation). For the first couple nights I was woken up with " rats" scurrying around. Anyway they were cockroaches not rats.
Large insects can make a lot of noise.

Well that will work out then when the snake eats the mouse/rat.
But this sounds it is going to be an issue to your wife.
