I like it too, and was able to see where some friends were.

AIS from old VHS to laptop sound card

I have bought an old VHF with the hope of using it as a backup radio and experiment with trying to set it up to get AIS data feed off of channel 87. The descriminator site does not reference this old VHS, no circuit diagrams are available. The advantage to getting an old unit is not only that I am looking for a cheap fix, but the old non-surface mount technology of the circuit board is advantageous. I am wondering if anyone has experience in how to locate the tie-in point on a typical old VHS. Is it possible, for instance, to use a the PC-to remote speaker cable to pickup the digital signals at points on the circuit board?

Re: Worldwide AIS site.

I have putted an AIS live tracker on my website too.

It uses the MarineTraffic data. It is live and I like it very much.

Re: Worldwide AIS site.

First time I've actually seen live data on this. Very neat stuff. We started using something like this in ham radio many, many years ago. APRS for tracking other hams around the world.

It's very similar in many respects.

More to the point, notice that there are no AIS targets within a thousand nautical miles of Somalia. For at least a year, standard operating procedure has been to turn off the AIS in those waters.

Re: Worldwide AIS Site

This is cool. I was looking at it last week, along with the live webcam at Miraflores, and used the AIS tracker to see which ship was coming into the lock - had the preview pics and everything, and then watched the very same ship enter the lock on the webcam.

Very cool, indeed.

I watch the Miraflores webcam, too, but never thought to watch the AIS along with it. THANKS for the idea!
