Snowball? No, not the snowball. That could be deadly to someone from Florida.

Re: What is Due East?

The first question should be why were you watching Who wants to be a Millionaire in the first place?

Is this something cruisers do?

Is there a list of good game shows future cruisers need to know about?

Truce-if you will bring sun & O juice we will negotiate the boundary.

I believe the use of Snowballs in war is outlawed under the Geneva Protocols, it falls somewhere between the Chemical and Biological Conventions.

But as we all know, rogue nations such as North Korea and Canada tend to snub their noses to such things.

There's a song about being "born and raised in South Detroit."

I've always assumed they meant Windsor.

Re: What is Due East?

If they want to make some nonsensical literal answer that assumes they don't make course corrections to keep heading due east, you could argue a planet circling alpha centari is the next bit of land they might hit.

Re: What is Due East?

Let me make it a bit more difficult:

I have a perfect ship. She is so perfectly straight and symmetric she does not need a compass nor does she need a Rudder. Once set on a course she will go in an absolute straight line, impervious to tides, waves, currents, winds and what not. A good friend in New York who owns a compass helps me point her "due East" and then I am off.

Where would I end up at the end of my journey?
Would my perfect boat trip end in Lisbon or in Africa?
Would this perfect ship follow a loxodrome or an orthodrome?

An orthodrome of course. To follow a loxodrome (rhumb line) you would have to change directions as the compass moves around.

If you believe Google Earth and OpenCPN, you will end up in Africa. That was apparently the very case which the question makers had in mind.

Definitely a trick question.

Sent from a stupid phone that replaces words with weird stuff.

The OP was watching the Indian version of "Who wants to be a millionaire

"Slumdog Millionaire"

Or they might have the same ethics.

Back to the question,

It not like heading Due North for Ten miles
Then due East for ten Miles
Then due South for ten miles
And end up exactly where you started.

The is very possible, something to think about.

Re: What is Due East?

Years ago a similar question was asked in Ocean Navigator magazine, except one more point was made. Heading due east from New York City, AND not touching the tiller or wheel, where would you hit land? The answer is Africa.
Take a 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper and place a corner on NYC and have one edge parallel to a Longitudinal line. Follow the 90 degree edge of the paper and you hit Africa.
Trick question for a game show.

I can tell that you have not been paying attention to this thread.

Ever give up Booze?

PS I generally prefer Meyer's to the Captain but haven't tried the black.

Let's assume also that magnetic directions will be exactly the same as true directions, and that earth is a perfect sphere.

You would follow an orthodrome / great circle to Africa. If you had a rudder, you could steer slightly to the left or to the right, and you would follow a small circle. With good probability that would take you back to New York or to some other place along the eastern coast of the Americas.

If you would use an autopilot, you would follow a loxodrome, and would end up close to Lisbon.

A wind vane could take you to Africa, if you follow a stream of wind dead downwind on an ideal and otherwise calm atmosphere. Beam reaching would take you to a loxodrome route if we assume a system where the air circulates around two opposite poles (not necessarily the usual suspects, north and south) of the earth. I don't know what will happen if you happen to hit one of the poles of the wind system. Maybe the changing wind will leave you oscillating back and forth at the pole (assuming you have a motor or ideal sails).

The small circle routes might be more useful than the long circle routes since you could sail longer distances. The longest small circle route that I know is from the mouth of St Lawrence River to Vancouver Island (go Canada go!). The longest great circle route seems to be only from Kamchatka to Pakistan. Don't know yet what the answers would be for New York.
