What does this mean?

Looking at the chart going into a river it says "3ft for mid-width of 50ft" and a date?

Re: What does this mean?

On the date written the depth was measured to be 3' in the middle of a channel 50' wide

Re: What does this mean?

I would say that this indicates the depth is 3' across a width of 50'....not that the channel is 3' deep only at its middle.

I believe the term " mid width" usually refers to the center 50% of the channel, with an additional 25% of channel width on each side, which is normally becoming shallower.

That sounds better than my answer.

Re: What does this mean?

3 ' in the dredge channel at the date next to the 3'X50' measured in the centre/the depth may change at the next tide or passage of large shoal draft boat/

Re: What does this mean?

It also means you better not be in anything much bigger than a row boat.

If this is the most current chart and updated per Notices to Mariners then the CG definitely should know. As should all mariners who will be navigating that area. It's the skipper's responsibility to have current charts.
