West Coast of Sumatra to Cocos Keeling

Getting ready for my Indian Ocean Crossing and am looking for info from those who have made the run down the West Coast of Sumatra to Cocos Keeling in late April or May from Thailand.

Went down the East coast and out the Sundra straits. Nice angle for Cocos Keeling. Fabulous place.

What he says. But make sure you time Sunda Strait right, we got it wrong, at night, the standing waves were huuuuuge!

We left from Bali for Christmas, CK, Rodrigues, and Mauritius - wonderful sail, strong trades, generally 25 knots and often 30+ but from a great direction. The sailing highlight of our trip - fast, happy passage.

Re: West Coast of Sumatra to Cocos Keeling

Did Sunda towards Fremantle in April once. Picked up the trades a day north of Sunda. Laid a course close west of Christmas Island with no fuss so Cocos should be a doddle.

Can't comment on west coast Sumatra.

Hi bob, just leaving the gold coast today for bali and then on to south Africa. I went up the west coast of Sumatra last year and have my open cpn tracks if that helps. Pm me your email if you would like them. May see you in cocos.

Cheers Dale.

Hi, does anyone have any experience of Sunda Strait to Cocos Keeling or Chagos Is. during November?

TIA

Re: West Coast of Sumatra to Cocos Keeling

Hi Tia, I've sailed both areas. November is cyclone season for Cocos Keeling. The lagoon is very beautiful but if a cyclone was to come your way, there zero places to hide.
There's good anchorages in the Sunda straight and you can get supplies and diesel.
