Angry Warning !!! Chartworld Enc are incomplete

Hello,
one has to be careful ordering worldchart Encs. They may be incomplete. I ordered chart 1/03009 Southern Adriatic Sea and must find out that there were lacking all terrestrial informations. No island names, no city names , ...nothing.
After complaining I got the answer, that this mistake shall be corrected this spring. Now we have summer and there is no correction at all. So I paid the full price for charts which are not complete at all.

So be careful

Re: Warning !!! Chartworld Enc are incomplete

Chartworld is primarily a reseller - they have no charts of their own.

They sell charts substantially from two sources:
1. Official ENC charts as produced by various hydrographic agencies (NOAA, UKHO etc etc)
2. Converted Navionics charts. These are charts that take Navionics data and convert it into S63 format, compatible with various software (including ours).

I am guessing you mean chart 1I03009. This is a Navionics S63 chart. Navionics S63 charts are generally not quite as feature-rich as official S63 charts. This may be part of the problem.

The other part of the issue is "non-standard" encoding, particularly as used for text labels in these charts. Some products support it (including PolarView) while others do not. If you use these charts with a product that does not support these "non-standard" tags, you are likely to find a lot of missing land and water feature labels.

I think ChartWorld was planning to move away from the non-standard labels but this hasn't happened yet (and I am not sure how they could, given that this is a difference in principle between Navionics data encoding and S57 encoding).

So, it may be that using different software would make land annotations re-appear. Or it may be that it won't and that's just what is in those charts.

Re: Warning !!! Chartworld Enc are incomplete

Hello brac,

thank you for the information. Yes it is 1I03009. I use it with MacEnc 8.40. When I complained at chartworld, they admitted that the lack of terrestrial informations is a mistake, which should be corrected within spring 2011. But they didn't deliver till today. I don't know whether other Enc charts from chartworld do have the same problem I just wanted to suggest, to be careful, before buying.

Regards
Arwed

Re: Warning !!! Chartworld Enc are incomplete

Just as a point of clarification, MacENC does support the extended objects/attributes of the Navionics ENCs (S-63 format) from ChartWorld. This includes the Annota object. So in this case it would appear as the chart is missing some of the object name data.

Re: Warning !!! Chartworld Enc are incomplete

We are now encouraging the use of the Navionics Gold charts from X-Traverse as they offer more complete coverage for a much lower price then similar charts from ChartWorld.
