wake up computer every 30 minutes

Hi,

sailing single handed with not-so-reliable batteries, I use my laptop on battery only at night, so that it doen't drain the house bank.

Is there a way to wake up the laptop every 30 minutes (or adjustable), so that the AIS plugged in openCPN can check around, and GPS can record the bearing and speed. And then laptop goes back to sleep after 5 minutes. I looked for a software but couldn't find one, tried to tweak with panified tasks in windows 7, but couldn't find anything that does the job.

Sort of adding a watchman. Alone at sea, away from cargo tracks (now in South Pacific), I sleep 30 to 45 minutes. If I could wake the laptop up in the middle of my nap it would be great!

Thanks!

This will surely not work on all the computers, but if you are lucky How to Make Your PC Wake From Sleep Automatically should help you.

Ahh, all this stuff that uses battery power are not needed! Just stop at a truck stop and buy a cheap alarm like the truckers use ! A howler !! will wake the dead! set it for 15 min and believe me it will wake ya up!! do your pass, ck all the things ya should ck and set it again !! been useing one for over 15 yrs now ! cost about 10 bucks then, still works great and uses cheap batts !! just a cheap sailors trick !

A quite powerful tool I didn't even know existed, thanks.

sankukaaai, check out the logbook konni plugin for opencpn as well, this can record GPS position, sog & cog automatically on a timer. Great plugin.

PlugIns | Official OpenCPN Homepage

I sail solo as well so thanks for the idea

Re: wake up computer every 30 minutes

OKAY I managed to make it work with task manager, but it is not easy!

Follow the tutorial about how to wake up computer automatically.

And then here is the trick :
click on the battery icon on bottom right corner and choose "other energy options" (or something similar, my laptop is in French, I am giving a rough translation), then "change mode settings" of the energy mode you are using for crusing (I created one called "nav nights" in which screen and computer go to sleep after one minute).

Then "change advanced settings" then under "sleep", activate "allow out of sleep timers".

That's it ! Now computer wakes up every 30 minutes, AIS checks around, and goes back to sleep after one minute! Thanks all!
