Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Ateball is 7.4nm miles to weather, in 227 position, I'm in 222. He is sailing 25.38 knots, I'm on a lower course in slightly less wind and sailing at 25.33 knots. I'm headed for the east end of the gate at about 150.17 degrees TWA. I could head up to protect my "safe leeward" by moving the destination POI at the gate (just kidding), but then I'd be giving up the optimal ETA at the gate. The point is, having a short one leg active route, allows you to adjust the destination POI, while letting the inherent VLM optimization occur for the route in between. This could be used if you anticipated certain changes in the next 6 hour VLM grib (a skill I have not gotten to yet.)

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Maitai and the other developers, thank you for the improvements in 3.3.5. I especially like the much easier selection of Routes and Routings with color coding, and the checkbox choice for Quick simplify and optimize.

One small idea to consider might be a global checkbox in Route Settings to "Global Hide all Intermediate POI" That setting would remain checked until overridden by un-checking any individual "Hide intermediate POI".

Route Copy: Under Route Edit - Route Settings box there is a selection in the upper right "Copy" which copies the Route. Before you close the Route Settings box, you should change the Route Name (add a "1" for example) to enable pasting later. (If you don't change the name you will receive a prompt for a route with the same name.) Close "Ok" Route Settings.

Right-click on the sea and select "Paste route" OR hit "Control-V" for paste. If you Route Edit the new Route, uncheck "No intermediate POI and change the color, you will be able identify and move the POI.

This route copy/paste is especially made for openCPN. You can copy/paste routes between the two programs

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Yes, I had forgotten that great feature, but it is also useful to create a new identical route, that is then modified by moving POI to test user driven alternatives. I've noticed that Copied Route does not go from the boat, which can be changed easily in Route Settings by checking "From the boat"

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Ateball is clearly ahead and is listed as 249. I am behind just a few miles, but listed as 244 which appears to be generous. Neither of us have done WP9 yet. I see Maitai's position number has gone up, but he is in better position than represented by the number. I just wonder how these are computed.

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

the ranking is calculated on the next gate, orthodromic. Ice gates do not count for the ranking. Since the next non-ice gate is more or less exactly south, the southest the better for today's ranking. But not for the final one

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

VLMt has me and Ateball up around 35 and 54 and Maitai and Kirke at 66 & 73, yet we are way south. I am sitll trying to get my head around this. Does VLM do a reverse Isochrone from favored end or middle of each gate, for each boat and compare ETA's? Or is this to compute intensive.

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Yes, this makes sense, ice gates are ignored. Now I'm on the march back down, #89, down to what? 250 optimistically. You timed a nice short cut Maitai.

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Does anyone know where we would find the ID numbers of the Real Boats?

Re: VENDÉE GLOBE round the world race

Maitai, in qtVlm, when I go to Boat > Race Settings > "Parametre des course" , and check "Show Real Boats" - Ah, Now I see the real Vendee Globe boats...sorry. At first I did not see them and tried the filter. Works exactly as you say, hover over the real Vendee boats and their number appears. Thank you.
