USA, alerts...it is proposing Sovereignty

USA, alerts...it is proposing Sovereignty over portions of the Arctic.

Is this the first sign of global...Warming?

Or is it business as usual?

It seems that with the ICE Breakers and everything they/we do up there...it should be theirs to grab.

???

Re: USA, alerts...it is proposing Sovereignty

It depends on wether you would rather have Russia have sovereignty or US over the area. Putin has already started making larger and larger territorial claims over the arctic.

Currently the Russians are the only ones with a fleet of nuclear ice breakers so they are the only ones with unfettered access to the area. The navy is working on a plan to increase US presence, and to make competing claims with Russia.

I am sure that the oil, gas, and trade routes in the area are the cause for this on both sides, as well as global warming making the area accessible. Were it not for these three things I doubt that anyone would care.

Good Answer,

Now consider that we started protecting the Arctic, long ago due to the potential of the land bridge.

Are we entering the warm war with Russia?

Maybe some day the USA/Canada will share a border with Russia.

Greenland should have the the biggest rights since they are in constant contact with the ice flow. If the ice melts away it would just be another ocean. If that happens there would be more to worry about then politics.

1. Declare it as the common heritage of mankind and then the claimants have to go up against the rest of the world in supporting their claims.

2. Clone Ronald Regan and turn the clone loose on Putin.

North of the Americas to the pole belongs to Canada. Geo studies have substantiated that.

IMHO it should be protected like the antarctic and turned into a no mans land where neither govt has rights to it.

I'm just looking forward to when it thaws enough so we can get to Halifax without having to go through Panama.

Probably more to do with oil claims than global warming.

The oil claims are only valuable thanks to global warming. Otherwise you can't get the equipment there necessary to extract the oil. The predictions are for drilling to start 2030ish, when the area will be ice free all summer.

Actually hasn't warmed the past 15 years.

Or is it business as usual?
We got a winner ! Oil, natural gas, various minerals(including gold),the Japanese want the pure iceberg water to have with their shark soup, etc..etc...

It seems that with the ICE Breakers and everything they/we do up there...it should be theirs to grab.
This isn't really anything new. North America, and Russian have had
arguments about the Arctic for ions. Always a good flanking move
when a distraction from more embarrassing news has the talking
heads resorting to reporting bad news about their anointed one is
needed.

Could you be clearer about the reference you used ? Thanks.

I am not sure I care about Arctics, Antarctica, oil or dirty business. I am Russian-born, live in USA with Green Card and Canadian passport... When and if Russians come to US, I will be viewed as traitor, not compatriot(by good old tradition) and shot. If Americans will not do that before Russians, just for "security"... I only hope to have enough time to run to Canadian border. Once one starts running, he keeps running.:-)
