Updating old charts.

Planning to sail from Calif. to the South Pacific this Spring. We've got a ton of old American (U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office) charts for French Polynesia. They're from the mid 1970's. Is there some way to update these charts?

Try to find "notices for mariners" or something like that for French Polynesia.

I would also tried French notices for mariners and chart corrections, Obviously French Polynesia is French, so I suppose, as well as for French waters they are issuing corrections for their colonies.

Re: Updating old charts.

Good luck in updating your old charts.
The U.S. NGA (the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) discontinued paper chart distribution in June 2010. Our charts were not updated from Notice to Mariners; therefore this is a reference collection and unsuited for navigation.
Tahiti and French Polynesia are located in NGA Region 2, but Tahiti was never covered (by NGA charts).
Obsolete NGA Charts 83024 Hao to Fangataufa, & 83255 Mururoa to Fangataufa covered the Tuamotu Isles.

Charts have to be the current edition to have the changes included in between your chart edition date and the current one. Only current edition updates are included in the Notices to Mariners.
The datum used in the charts ought to match your electronic equipment (usually WGS 84).
The changes that have occurred may be fairly trivial or entire islands positions could have moved by miles.
