TomTom

Ok stupid question and requiring a short answer I expect. I have a TomTom navigator 6 bluetooth gps unit. Can it be used for marine navigation such as CPN or is it only fit for the car. Panic not, I don't have a boat to get lost on yet so wont be floating lost in the briney. Just like to make full use of stuff I already have before handing over my hard earned for new stuff.

Thanks Chuck. I thought as much. does give me lat and long though so if
I were desperate I could use it in conjunction with a paper chart I suppose. I'll go browsing the Garmin stuff now. Thanks again.

My "road only" Garmin has a hiking mode that will give a latitude/longitude position which can then be plotted on a marine chart. Also would show your position on the water but of course without depth, markers, etc but still somewhat useful for navigation.

When it was really handy was when we were trying to find the dock for a water front restaurant in a strange town. Programmed in the address and lead us right there.

So, not the perfect solution but I would take it along as a spare if it had a lat/lon mode.

New small plotters with built in GPS are so inexpensive now, you might as well have something that gives you what you will need. Chuck

Re: TomTom

It's possible to use certain TomTom devices, although I wouldn't rely on it for navigation (except in emergencies).

Use the freeware ttMaps: ttMaps

You have to prepare your charts yourself, which means some work.

A screenprint of my TomTom showing part of a Gulf of Mexico chart is attached.
