These World Maps may mess with your mind!
....not sure what it would do to a GPS .
The Hobo-Dyer Equivalent Area Projection:
Conventional (Mercator) Map - except upside down!
And why the Chinese think they are the centre of the World - because they are! (and the Aussies!):
Bit of an old Map (Conventional / Mercator) - but as you can see the West is on the Fringes, including the USA and Europe and especially the UK!

It all depends on your perspective, doesn't it?

Greenland thinks it looks fat in Mercator projection.

I saw my first upside down map years ago when I spent some time in the Canadian Arctic, will never forget it. I've always been a big Buckminster Fuller fan and have attached a version of his Dymaxion Map.

Re: These World Maps may mess with your mind!
Love these maps. I had my students build a false wall and put a 10X20 mercator projection up for a backboard, dry erase surface. I wanted to build a Bucky Fuller Dymaxion inside out big enough to get inside, but never got around to it. Maps are awesome. Maps seduced me into travel. Maps seduced me into sailing.

FYI, the bottom chart is Japanese not Chinese - those are Kana mostly on the chart which are phonetic characters.
For example アメリカ = Ah Me Ri Ka = America.
Note that on this map much of the text reads right to left, so America is written backwards in our terms カリメア
Thanks for sharing these - very cool.

Maps in school were always the type with Australia in the middle & Atlantic on the edges, looks normal to me...
Didnt know the upside down maps were serious, I thought they were a piss-take.

I doubt if they will replace the "Normal" ones any time soon......but of course there is no "right way up" of the Earth.
..........although I was aware that the usual format for "our" world map was European centric for the simple fact that the Europeans drew it, I had not realised that world view dates back to c. 15th century.........not too many other world views have survived from those days! (albeit to be fair, back then they did cure the Witch problem ).

Yeah, I spent 5 mins searching for a really good one I had seen before (with China bang in the centre) - but got bored so settled on the Japanese version!
