Re: The Lighthouse Thread

Always wondered about that shot, like does the guy duck inside the second after it was taken? Great photo.

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

Not sure what he did, but I would be so worried the whole structure would wash away that I may not be in a stable state of mind!

No. He finished his cigarette first. Quickly.

It is a great photo.

Maybe he's still drying out his trousers?

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

Interesting L/H on the west side of Rathlin Island, with the light at the bottom of the tower.

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

That's different. I tried to find some history but couldn't find an explanation why it was built upside down. Can only assume it was easier that way.

It almost looks like rather than being upside down, the original lighthouse was already there and the rocks formed around it. I know this isn't the case but from the light down it looks like a traditional lighthouse.

I have been told that the light is at the bottom because there is frequent low lying cloud in that area, so lower is better. You still need a tower because the optics are (well, probably were) rotated by a mechanism driven by falling weights, like a grandfather clock.

Can anyone confirm this?

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

I had wondered that because the photo shows clouds up above. Interesting about the falling weights, never heard that before.
