Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

Owing to shortcomings in the Globalstar SPOT 'Adventure' module,I have been experimenting with an interesting GE based program called 'Bungee'.

It has many interesting features, such as the ability to upload .kmz files with track and full info as well as photos,to a server over radio modem.

By updating the track and uploading it at regular intervals,a fresh and up-to-date track can be viewed by interested parties from a website.

It is also possible to download old track info for updating and insertion of photos.

Finally, 'Bungee' can also run a track in test modus similar to that found in the Fugawi Marine ENC program.

A new version is in the pipeline with addittional features and improvements.

Hi Jim..

Yes,Greg has also developed a very interesting GE cache program for off-line use.
I was hoping he would also make OpenCPN versions available in the form of plug-ins.

Re: Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

Here's the same route/track Bergen-Trondheim imported to OCPN in .gpx.

Would look great with photo capability and test runs from 'Bungee' as a plug-in.

Re: Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

Here,Bungee is used to display an interesting trip to Antarctica from Puerto Williams.
Unfortunately the original 'Adventure' track does not have any data/time stamps, but
the waypoints are correct.

As a comparison, see the same trip with OCPN using an NGA chart near Anvers Island.
All geo locs are available using Route Manager.

Download the Antarctica.gpx file here:http://www.yachtmarine.com/DOCUMENTS/Antarctica.gpx.doc

Re: Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

Bungee v 6.2 is out.. Download here:Heppenstall GPS Software - Bungee for Google Earth

Basic update version which also CLEARS the buffer when you select the Clear recent track list. This is handy when you have imported faulty/incomplete track data.

Use the Google Earth interface to save the track details in .kmz format for independent and automatic track display in GE.

Re: Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

Another great feature of Bungee's use of Google Earth is that you can add navigation information such as light houses etc. in GE.

There is a complete listing of lighthouses for New Zealand, with or without photos. I would strongly recommend marine users to add such info from THEIR areas for the benefit of all of us.

When viewing Bungee created routes/tracks,make sure you have all relevant layers ticked in the GE side panel. Here is an amazing amount of information available.

Re: Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

As an alternative to the existing GE plugin,it is also possible to use the 'Bungee' GE display in a dual screen modus with OCPN,where the same imported track can be displayed in both windows, with the added feature of own photos being displayed in the Bungee/GE window, together with all other info and photos contained in GE.
You can also perform a simulated passage with Bungee.

For the un-initiated,use the following steps:

1. Load up Bungee/GE with the imported .gpx track.
2. Load up OCPN with the imported .gpx track.
3. Press and hold CTRL and right click the minimized GE window.
4. While continuing to press CTRL,right click any one of the two minimized progs
and select your choice of window display from the displayed menu.
5. You now have a dual screen showing the imported track. Adjust as neccessary.

Re: Testing Out GE 'Bungee'

I have set up a GPX-KMZ Track directory where interesting tracks will be available for download.

The .KMZ files displays all track details with photos as well as all normal Google Earth information.

The .GPX files are OpenCPN compatible and can be imported through the Route Manager. Also compatible with most other nav. progs.

Here are the tracks so far:

Enjoy!
