I have run into this same problem with both my iPad and my Garmin. This may sound silly, but you need to tilt or rotate either your head or the display. You can see the brightness change and probably get it so the display completely disappears. It is annoying but easy to work around.

The light emitted from most displays is highly polarized, so when viewing them through polarized glasses you have to be lined up just so. At some point I want to do a post on this in much more detail. I learned all about this when I repaired my very old depth gauge with some recycled material from an old lap top screen.

I don't really have a problem seeing my Garmin but cannot see the IPad at all....sometimes I think it has gone off and then remember I have my sunglasses on . 😁

Re: Tablet for navigation

And to save a few $$ if you decide on an iPad, I have purchased both iPad and MacBook Air from the Apple store online as reconditioned. Came with a one year warranty and I got the Applecare to boot. Just a thought.

Not so with the Android tablets (Asus Nexus and Samsung) and phones (two different Motorolas, now two Samsung S5s) we had/have. GPS is enabled no matter what (assuming I've selected GPS ON in the settings menu).

IOW, we have GPS even when out of range of either WiFi networks or cell towers.

Re: Tablet for navigation

When I sailed by boat from the Virgin Islands up the islands and back to Florida I used an iPad and iPhone with the garmin app and charts loaded on them as my backup navigation. Actually, it's probably more fair to say they served as my primary navigation and the dedicated GPS ended up being the backup.

Similarly when I chartered in the Abaocs a few months ago, I relied on my iPhone and Garmin app more than the ship GPS since the Garmin charts are much more accurate there. I think the entire U.S. coastline and Bahamas are only $30. The app is free.

Don't get Microsoft surface. It does not have GPS sensor. I bought one and returned it because it has no GPS. There are quite a few apps for navigation on Windows store.
