Re: Stolen boat sy Isis II from Union Isl yesterday

Here is a short report from the owner:

Gaute Ulvøy
11 hrs · Clifton, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

"As most people have understood by now, my boat is gone. To keep it short. Drove the crew into the harbor and was at the kite place to check for free space. Agreed an hour at 1400.

When I returned to Isis ll there was a local boat alongside, the engine cover open. When he saw me he wept and cried that he had an engine failure and wondered if I could tow him to Happy Island. I did so and return aboard. Remained 3 4 hours on board and went ashore at 1320 and to the kite course place.

Looking at the boat several times from course place, and do not know what time it was last time I saw her. She is on a mooring buoy since the anchor ground is bad with a lot of stones. Dives down yesterday to look after anchor. After the course, we wanted to return to the boat but it is gone.

Then try to contact the Ranger Police and Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is helpful and everyone must be notified from Trinidad to St Lucia. Got a fast boat to lease but it gets dark very fast. Also tried to rent a plane but it was in Martinique. It will not return until tomorrow possibly.

The police played billiards while we were looking and trying to organize something. The police do not warn anyone and do not have phone number for police in Cariaque.

If she were dragging or got released from the buoy, she had to take a 90 degree turn to get out of the harbor. Think mooring buoy is still there but must admit that my head is a bit empty at the moment.

There is a reward to find the boat."

Clifton, Union Island.
I could have guessed.

St Vincent & The Grenadines. What a cesspool in a beautiful country.

Nothing distinctive about that boat. Thieves should have no problem sailing that off. Just another completely non-descript sailboat that looks like any other. Nothing there to distinguish that boat... except maybe that 20-foot-tall picture of Isis.

Sems to have a surfboard tied to the cockpit roof, but the thieves probably removed that. US Cabin cruiser Madame Geneva 42´ arrived within meters of Isis II position about 14:00 - 15:00 LST yesterday and must have seen some movements. However, she is leaving her anchorage at this moment 12:00 LST and it would have been possible to give her a VHF call to inquire.

Tiny Happy Island lies just 170-200 m East of the Isis II mooring buoy.
Seems like a small restaurant and several people must have seen the scenario when the boat was stolen in the afternoon of 25 April. A phone call to the restaurant may be appropriate.

I think I'll buy a "Low Jack" tracking device that I can hide on board. Unless they sink it it location will always be known. I've always wondered why more boats aren't stolen. This kind of thing is a catastrophe for the victim. Sorry you got taken. Hope you find it soon and in good shape.

Hope you find your boat safe and sound, and that the thieves are severely dealt with.

Re: Stolen boat sy Isis II from Union Isl yesterday

US flagged 50' sloop Madame Geneva arrived on the mooring at 14:21 according to our Irridium. There were a few charter cats, an Amel yawl S/Y Trade Winds and a larger cat all moored inside the reef. Many moorings here were empty until this morning.
We opened the bar at Happy Island and stayed until dusk. Isis 2 was not recognized by my wife or me.
A crew member approached in a dinghy after dark explaining the situation. This was our first encounter with the boat and her situation.
We are heading south and have promised to keep a sharp eye out.

Re: Stolen boat sy Isis II from Union Isl yesterday

Thinking on this over lunch- we came in from Bequia and are certain we only saw 2 boats heading north on the rhumb line betwixt the 2 ports. One was a hunter the other a small cat. It would be difficult- of course not impossible- for another boat to pass northward without us seeing her. I would suggest looking other directions for what it's worth.

Madame Geneva. Thank you for your observations.

You arrived only 40 min after Gaute went ashore for his Kiting slot at 14:00 hrs. It would have been impossible for Isis II to disappear during this period and MUST have been present, and from the AIS reports, very close to you.

As you said, you ´opened´ Happy Island, perhaps after a little siesta, not having paid particular attention to the boats moored around you, until later,by which time the thieves could have escaped?

The boat was flying a Dutch flag and sported a surfing board on top of the doghouse. Otherwise no other unusual features until the mainsail was up displaying a large print of Isis.

Thinking like a boat thief, I would strip what I could quickly, then set her adrift. So you might want to follow the current or look downwind before too long.

Getting the word out is the best thing you can do.

Shocking that the local police aren't taking swift action. Its a big boat, hard to hide. The locals know what happened, but they won't be talking to you. Offering a fat reward will only convince them that you can afford the loss.

This is a terrible crime. They stole your home!

Luckily, the boat has been found by the owner about an hour ago.

Isis II is a very beautiful boat in a very good shape and just got new sails some weeks ago. Also, Gaute is a very nice guy and i hope everything is fine with the boat.

Re: Stolen boat sy Isis II from Union Isl yesterday

Madame Geneva. According to the AIS track records, you anchored around 20 meters away from Isis II when you arrived from the South at 14:39 LST. Gaute left the boat at 13:20 LST more than an hour before your arrival. Strange you did´nt see Isis II.
Anchorage positions by AIS:
Isis II 12.59381° / -61.4115°
Madame Geneva 12.594° / -61.41146°

I understand from txg-Berlin that the boat has just been found by the owner and I look forward to hear the scenario. Thanks again for helping out.
