Something about Virgins

There is a mnemonic device used to remember the corrections to course to steer i.e., deviation, variation, etc. Went something like "virgins make dull..." something, something.

Anyone remember this?

I don't know that one (unless it was a joke I missed) but I use CADET (compass add east to true) with magnetic in the middle. That is, add East when going from compass to magnetic.

Thanks for posting that link.

That site (CockpitCards) has some very nice low cost items for any boat to have in the cockpit. Handy reference cards on a number of nautical topics. I like their approach to presenting information. Good stuff.

How about the memory aid for reading the color codes to determine the value of resistors.

re: Something about Virgins

True virgins make dull company
West is best, East is least

How about this trick for wind force
Works from force 2 thru 8
(Force minus 1) x 5= wind speed
Or (wind speed /5)+1= force

So force 5 -1= 4
4x5= 20

20/5=4
4+1=5

Not exact but right in the appropriate range
Cheers

Get a Portland Plotter and use the compass rose.

The more politically correct version TeleVision Makes Dull Children

And we have a winner!!!

My wife just got a Facebook question from someone at Active Captain asking if "Is there an actual difference between SOG and knots per hour?" You should have read some of the answers

My wife answered the question for the OP, while others wandered off into statute miles, where the origin of the nautical mile comes from (not quite accurately, though) and whether kph indicated kilometers per hour or "knots per hour".

I realize that after nearly 50 years sailing I take some things for granted. I also frequently take shortcuts when the situation allows. But this got me thinking about VMG and leeway, vectors, and of course, virgins...

But with chart plotters and GPS and integrated instruments, etc., does no one any more chart a course with pencil, parallel rules and a real paper chart? Can boaters explain what the compass rose on a chart is used for? Does the preponderance of "gadgets" allow the uninformed to safely travel the high seas? Have we dumbed down what being a sailor is? Looking at the way boaters have tied to the dock cleats in the marina I am currently in, they certainly haven't bothered to learn knots and ropework.

Maybe I'm just a cranky old boater, or not!

Am I way off base?

- True Virgins Make Dull Companions At Weddings
Or such is the mnemonic device which they taught us at that fancy school run by Uncle Sam. And it's opposite being.
- Dead Men Can't Vote Twice At Elections.

Such assumes that my memory of learning this 27yrs ago, still serves.

Having just earned my RYA
Coastal Skipper (in the UK)
I can absolutely tell you that these skills are still being taught and
drilled. We went further and had to do "passage planning"
Plot course on paper charts in true
Determine CTS for each leg
(Variation,deviation,set & drift leeway)
Time and tidal state at estimated time of departure and arrival
Tidal curves for secondary ports nearby in case of emergencies
Length of legs
Transits along the way
Three point bearing fixes along the way
And so on
Then throw in Dead Reckoning

All timeless skills still being taught
and necessary to master in the RYA
Sceme

On the lite side
The term "four pints of accuracy "
Sometimes is used
