Re: Sailing Lake Michigan

It depends on your experience. With winds out of the north it would be rough, from every other direction Traverse Bay is sheltered. You could sail the bay if your experience is limited. A good passage is to St James on Beaver Island. Good harbor, excellent holding and nice marina. From Traverse City to the tip of Traverse light is 37 miles. Beaver Island is about ? 25 miles from north port.
Another passage is TC to north-port , good marina, then around the point south to Leland. Good marina, quant town. 15 miles offshore is South Manitou Island a national park. There is an anchorage open to the east but ok otherwise.
Another passage is to Charlevoix. Bridge opens on the hour and half hour. Great town make reservations for slip.

If you get to Beaver Island go a few miles south to South Manitou Island. It has a large cove very well protected from all but weather from the east.

Re: Sailing Lake Michigan

You could spend week easy staying in Grand Traverse Bay. I would recommend checking out a Lake Michigan Cruising guide or check out the Great Lakes Cruising Club website.

Re: Sailing Lake Michigan

Traverse City offers a great starting point for both daysailing and cruising. Ports in Grand Traverse Bay includes Elk Rapids, Northport, Suttons Bay and, right around the point, Leland. Head north out of Grand Traverse Bay into Little Traverse Bay and Harbor Springs, Charlovoix and Petoskey are all great harbors. Northwest from Grand Traverse Bay is Beaver Island. You will not be disappointed in any named place. Pick your destination based on wind and weather. Additionally, Traverse City is a pretty cool place as well. Great restaurants and more.

Re: Sailing Lake Michigan

I would agree with most of the above. TC is a great town, but my advice for sailing is go north. Much more room, usually more consistent winds, and very relaxing. Really depends on what your ideal day looks like. If it is sailing go north and stay north. Restaurants, you cannot beat TC. Suttons Bay, Charlevoix, Petoskey. Quaint,,,Beaver Island and Northport. Both sailing, marinas, and food.......Suttons Bay, Petoskey, Beaver (Ninna's)quadrant. Great anchorage...South Manitou if not too brisk, Beaver Island, Omena Bay( if you have a dingy Knot Just a Bar is great).
The Bays and the northern Lake Michigan are beautiful. Have fun and hope for wind!

If you are chartering from Great Lakes their book has a good selection in it. Ask them for their recommendations as well.

Re: Sailing Lake Michigan

Here is a series of videos on Cruising the grand Traverse Bay area, but together by the locals, lots of great input, suggestions, and local knowledge. Very informative, and helpful. You don't have to leave the bay to have a lot of fun. Just search the site and watch the videos...
