Sailing Florida's Indian River (Vero to Jensen Bch)

Looks like a huge protected open water area but is most of it too shallow to sail even a five foot draft?

Parts of it have more water than you would suspect, just need the charts.
The ICW channel has plenty of water, I usually manage to sail from south of Vero Beach to south of Melbourne if the wind's in a favorable direction.

Thanks 1Step and Mike. Will be new to the area and your experience helps. I imagined an onshore wind could allow north-south transits. I assume the dredged channel is sometimes not that wide.

But when I last looked, Jensen Beach is South of Vero Beach, not north as is Melbourne. With rare exception the ICW is for motoring. You could go out at Ft. Pierce and come in at Stuart...I think. I have never tried the inlet there and don't plan to. I'd likely come in at Palm Beach. But I'm a chicken when it comes to these inlets and my boat draws over 6 feet.

Regards,
Captain Ron (Arrh Matty)

Re: Sailing Florida's Indian River (Vero to Jensen Bch)

RK, there is an area in the Indian River that has room for some east/west sailing, in addition to the usual north/south. Unfortunately its a bit far north of Vero.

North of Melbourne, north of the Eau Gallie bridge, and south of the next bridge which I think is the Pineda Causeway bridge, there is a somewhat large and deeper part of the Indian River. Melbourne Yacht Club races bigger boats there.

Its aproximately between red 102 and red 98. If you check the chart you may get a better feeling for what the possibilities are. I used that area once to calibrate my compass and autopilot.

Lol.
Going brain dead in my old age, meant to say from south of New Smyrna Beach/Edgewater to south of Melbourne, sometimes farther with intermittent periods of motor sailing.

Thanks all. I'll interpret from this as the farther north you go, the more depth is available outside the ICW ditch. Better yet, find the right weather and combine that with local knowledge of inlet passage to go outside.
