RYA Online Courses

I am wanting to do an online RYA course.

Any recommendations for a service provider?

Does anyone have any experience with one of these online courses?

My 2 cents ... RYA courses, for which I have qualified to Coastal Skipper (working toward yachtmaster) are well recognized, meet all compliances and will qualify you as a proficient skipper providing you with the requisite confidence to allow you to sail in all conditions. But, in my opinion, they need to be done in the class and followed by the practical training and assessments. Online wouldn't cut it...in my opinion.

Just to avoid confusion. coastal skipper and Yachtmaster are on board exams only. The shore based courses are simply Course attendance Certs

The RYA theory courses usually take place in a classroom, not on a boat. The practical courses obviously onboard where you put into practise the tidal, passage planning etc theory you learned in the classroom. Or online. Works well.

Nope... just refreshed my RN seamanship knowledge then took the IHOC Practical as it was known then.. can go upto 24m and 80GT Power or Sail... but its not a commercial ticket.
Delivery work came later...

There is only one practical course , that is the RYA Day skipper course. You can do it as a classroom plus on boat time or all on a boat.

Maybe I am missing a technicality in the language, but in my understanding the RYA Coastal Skipper course

(Coastal Skipper | Sail Cruising | Courses | Learning | Courses & Training | RYA)

is also a "practical course". I did it years ago and the English weather was cold and wet enough to make quite "practical" IMHO.

The long pub sessions every night waiting for the tide also may count as "practice" for those of us who needed some practice to learn how to down pint after pint at the same pace as the locals!

Same for the Competent Crew course some folks did while I was doing my Day Skipper..

Or where you restricting the definition to courses that you can "fail" on?

That sounds like 2 courses, theory and practical.

The RYA website mentions 4 practical courses, hadn't heard of "start yachting" before. Others are competent crew, day skipper and coastal skipper.

Sorry yes two courses , excluding starter types competent crew . I've never rated the coastal skipper one as its not separated enough from the excellent day skipper

And yes I am restricting my definitions to ones you can fail

But my main distinction was about the fact there isn't a RYA YM course
