Planning for a sailboat documentary

Hi all,
I am a recent college graduate who is planning a sailboat trip in search of adventure, surfing, and meaning. I want to edit an independent video documentary and write a novel/photo essay about my adventure. I live in Portland, Oregon and am looking to purchase a $5 to 9 thousand dollar 30' cruiser to make a journey from Oregon to Hawaii and then to Indonesia. My problem is I know little about the extent of planning and navigating this voyage.

I have started learning how to sail and reading every book possible. However I still have so many questions. Can anyone give me advice on navigating this route, weather, and other components of the journey to consider?

THANKS!

Take baby steps. Learn a little at a time until you know how to safely cross oceans. Seek the help of the more experienced and get as much actual experience as you can. Reading is an excellent start, absorb as much as you can.

I wish you the best with your adventure.

Cascade 29 Sailboat
Many Cascade boats have been to the South Pacific and back.
Built right in your back yard.
