Pin to USB

My buddy has nobeltec and his computer only has usb ports. he bought the adapter pin/usb but the gps signal is not getting through.

I'd appreciate a tip to help him out. any ideas

When you say pin, I assume you mean a serial port to usb adaptor. Most of these have a driver that must be installed or it won't see the connection.

Another thing that happens is that your software may not be looking at the right port. It may scan only a few ports and the serial/usb connection may be on a much higher number port. Once you figure that out, you can probably tell your software where to look for the gps signal.

One other thing I have encountered is that the gps may be sending proprietary signal i.e. Garmin, when the software is looking for generic signal.

like he said: you need to know which port the usb serial adapter is coming into the computer. it changes for my gps everytime i plug it in. i usually look at the device manager ports to see which one is active.
