OpenCPN and Garmin data transfer

I recently upgraded to 3.2 running on a new computer with Win 7.

I have run into a problem in uploading routes and waypoints from the computer to a Garmin Etrex handheld GPS.

When I upload without using Garmin settings I get a successful upload message but nothing is there! I have tried all combinations of settings on both the Garmin and the OCPN toolbox and nothing works. If I set all/any to Garmin settings I get an Error message that the upload has failed.

I didn't have this problem on the previous computer XP and 3.0

Anyone got any ideas where I'm going wrong or for a work around?

Thanks in advance

Re: OpenCPN and Garmin data transfer

I am new to OpenCPN and just spent several hours trying to use my new Garmin GPSMAP 78sc to send position data to OpenCPN running on a Windows 7 PC. I finally got it to work by installing Garmin drivers on the PC. The drivers seemed unnecessarily difficult to discover on the Garmin site. Perhaps they'll also help with the data transfer you're trying to do. They are located here on the Garmin site.

In case it helps, I documented the steps here for configuring OpenCPN and the Garmin GPS for communicating over a standard USB cable.

FYI, there is a sub-forum dedicated to OpenCPN support at:

OpenCPN - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

You might get a quicker response there.

Re: OpenCPN and Garmin data transfer

I have been using OpenCPN for years now and have logged 20k miles using it. I's only since I moved up to 3.2 and win 7 that the problems have arisen. It reads the nmea input - the garmin just doesn't get the uploads when OCPN says they have been uploaded sucessfully - Really irritating!

Re: OpenCPN and Garmin data transfer

Success - not sure why. Ticked the box in connexions for garmin, set the garmin for garmin and it worked..... didn't before. If at first you don't succeed - keep trying!
