Online Map Question

Our kids keep asking where we are and I'd like to be able to send them our position, have them enter it on their computer and have a map of where we are. Does anyone know of a web site that allows this type of search? If I just send them a map and coordinates and have them try to find us, they'll think that we're in china.

How about GoogleEarth? I think there's a facility to plot your track, as well.

try Maptech: Topo Maps Charts Navigation Software GPS and FREE Online Mapserver and look for the button for the online map server, it will give you a choice of nav/aviation/topo maps so the kids can see where you are in different scales and views as well.

One caveat: Their maps come from all different datums, you may get datum shift problems especially if you go from nav to topo (often not updated) or vice versa. But, they are free and comprehensive for the US.

This is the most used reporting and tracking service specifically for boaters.

There are websites like shiptrak or yotreps where you can send a short email to the website, then the kids can track your progress on a map. If you use Winlink or Sailmail, its all pretty much automated in the Airmail program. For an example, but my ham call sign KK6DQ into shiptrak.org

The sites mentioned are geared towards this, but Google Maps (the Maps tab in Google is probably the easiest- nothing to install. Just paste the northing and easting from your GPS into the adress textbox. Try it - find me at E127.76,N26.31. There's also a "link to this page" button to generate a link that you can e-mail.

Google Maps has a feature where you can create personalized maps which you can share with you family and friends. You can for example place your Noon Position on this map each day and people can bring up this this map and see how you are progressing...with annotations to each entry.

I think that is exactly what you are looking for.

Thanks for all of the great info!!! We've decided to start a sail-blog. We have a few dozen friends who like to know what there idiot friends are doing on their boat. And our family can keep track of where we are.
