not so ready about?

hate to be a total nube.., but my wife and I are about to head south from Newport,Or to Santa Cruz the second week of August in my coronado 25 with only this years worth of sailing expirence and have sooo many questions. I have been a deckhand for about three years on many types of F/V's but this seems like a whole different animal altogether. any advice on how to prepare and what to expect would be greatly apreciated.

Do some practical sailing courses. Seriously. It is amazing how it's much easier to see how the wheel works than to try and re-invent it. Also get some experienced person aboard your own ship and have them show you how everything works.

Make sure you know the rules of the sea before setting out. So do some theory courses as well.

Mate, that can be a pretty rough stretch of water, one worthy of concern in much more suitable boats than a Coronado 25.

Are you really sure that this is a good idea? I've got a lot of sea miles and would not attempt it myself in that boat.

I agree, not saying it cant be done, but you should have more experience for that stretch of water.... even in the summer. The C25 is a great sailing little boat, but has large windows and an unprotected rudder. So you should know the condition of that rudder... haul the boat and check it out... bearings tight? stuffing not leaking? Fiberglass in good shape and still firmly attached to the post?
Other considerations are:
rigging condition, how old is the wire?
being ready to reef often and quickly
large bilge pumps
how to recharge the batteries?
Small headsail available
Good drop boards for the companionway
Adequate Cockpit drains
Is the keel a bolt on? Are those bolts seaworthy?

Get 'Cruising the Northwest Coast' by George Benson. He sailed a modified Coronado 25 up and down the coast from SF to Canada several times. Interesting book with a lot of information that apply to small boat sailing along the coast.

We had gone over her thoroughly when we were repainting her bottom and noticed that the old folks that we picked her up from had put about 1/3''of latex paint over the years and that surprisingly did a wonderful job in preserving her hull. And the sails, furler and rigging I am told from other sailors in the in the marina are good/fine aside from some of the blocks and worn pins. We stepped the mast ourselves, repainted and named her Granuiale(had no name) and other than that she is in amazing condition. I have just recived the 100 watt solar panel and charge controller in the mail i ordered and will be installing that to two 102mAh marine grade storage cells, thats a whole other can but Ive done lots of reading, and i have i smaeller trickle charger for the starting batt.

I imagine that you've peeled off the latex to se what is underneath and put some really good bottom paint on her?

Thruhull fittings should be checked thououghly. Any tanks should be cleaned out and make certain your engine is in good working order.

Let us know if there is something you find that you have a question about.



Chainplates and rigging need to be checked thorougly. You should have no cracks in the stainless and no broken wires. Check for soft spots in the deck where you will be putting lots of weight when reefing or handling fore sails.
