Nobeltec 11

I have the opportunity to upgrade to Nobeltec 11.1
Has anyone any experience of this version? Any comments/criticisms/positives?
Thanks

Re: Nobeltec 11

I have Nobeltec 10.7. Unless the mother incesters put back the ENC vector charts I will never give them another nickel! Quite happy with Coastal Explorer.

Re: Nobeltec 11

From the Nobeltec website:
"Software Update 9.3.2240
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Installation of this software upgrade will remove your currently installed S57 charts and your ability to view them in the future."

A move by the former owners (Jeppesen) to remove the capability to use the free ENCs (and even former Nobeltec vector charts) and force you to buy their vector charts. Couched in safety considerations, completely ignoring the fact that the ENCs are approved for navigation and their charts are not. And this fiasco has not yet been corrected by the current owners AFAIK. Unless 11.1 does it unannounced.

BTW, I still use ENC vector charts by never updating beyond 9.3.2218 for my Vista computers, but that version doesn't correct errors or work on Windows 7. I normally use the CE vector charts as in the attachment.

I can appreciate the ill-will generated by that move to restrict your cartography. Maybe being purchased by Maxsea will change a few things for the better. That aside, has anyone tried the 11.1 update?

Re: Nobeltec 11

sded,

I am beginning to think about switching from VNS 10.7 to a non-Nobeltec product. From what I read the version 11 new features are of little interest to me. The new Trident thing seems over priced, and Nobeltec's support has failed to fix a problem.

Suddenly after installing a Comar AIS-B system the console windows for Boat Speed, Water Temp, and Depth Below Keel data went blank. View Data shows that the NEMA sentences with this data are still being received by VNS 10.7. After sending Nobeltec a log file, and description of the issue, they tell me they have no idea why it is happening or how to fix it. So now I am thinking it is time to switch as you have done.

Can you, or others here tell me if Coastal Explorer will use the routes and charts that run under VNS 10.7?

Re: Nobeltec 11

guys,

that "new Trident" thing is MaxSea TimeZero, just like that product or a Furuno Navnet 3D plotter. You can finally upgrade to a superior product.

Check out Panbo on the issue: Panbo: The Marine Electronics Weblog: ChartTable21; coming together, thank you!

ciao!
Nick.

Re: Nobeltec 11

Yes; CE will import the routes and waypoints/marks directly from your copy of VNS, or you can export them from VNS as a NavObj file and CE will import that-see attachment. CE can not use the proprietary VNS charts, but uses the ENC, RNC, Softchart, and a variety of others. There is even a synch process that will automatically update your database as new charts are released by NOAA.

BTW, I have been a VNS supporter since Dave Steckler ran it as Navtrek; no more.

Isn't it interesting how a company can shoot itself in the foot so dramatically. Presumably top down management.

Re: Nobeltec 11

when windows 2000 came out nobeltec told me my version would NOT work on it and that I needed to upgrade to the newer version. I told them that I had been using it for 6 months on windows 2000 and the only problem was the mouse when you start up if you had the gps connected. They basically said it would work but that they do not support it. I asked them why they said it would NOT work and they hung up the phone on me,,,never bought another nobeltec product again....but I think i made lots of copys of the disks to give away after that but I can not remember now
