New Zealand to Chile, then cruising Chile

Plans are well under way for our next adventure...New Zealand to Chile, via Rarotonga, French Polynesia etc, and then we will cruise down to the bottom of Chile....anyone out there with some advice, tips....one thing we were wondering was about going around the horn and then continuing up the east coast

I am planning the same route but in the opposite direction.

If you are planning to cruise Patagonia/Tierra Del Fuego:

"The Italian Guide". It is written in english and is a must have. You are going to need to find safe harbor on a daily basis and this guide outlines all of them.

If you want the best charts of the area, get them from SHOA. Expensive but the best, either ENC or paper. You can also get by with "The Almanac" which is a readable 1/3 size book containing every chart that they publish.

The first leg out of NZ can be rough and you must time well in between the systems. Boats can get bashed on this stretch, avoid being one of them.

Onwards from Polynesia, the take off is easy and then you will be going more and more into southern wx with lows to the S of your track and associated fronts, shifts and swells.

Many boats enter way up high into the channels and continue inshore before rounding the cape. There are places to anchor before the cape so that with a good forecast the rounding is not difficult in the right season.

Get good anchoring gear as it can blow down there very hard and anchoring can be a combination of anchor/shore line techniques, etc.. Also, many anchorages are deep. Good, and plenty of, anchorage gear a must.
