New England to Bermuda recommendations

I'll be making my first offshore passage to Bermuda this spring. I have a Raymarine chart plotter. What do you recommend as a backup hand held unit?
What charts are recommended? Any other hints or tips are appreciated. Thanks.

I'd suggest a back up HH GPS and a waterproof VHF... a Passage chart that covers from you to Bermuda.. a chart of Bermuda and one for Hatteras to Beaufort in case you have to run S. West for any reason...

Re: New England to Bermuda recommendations

Here's a link to a guide that tells you just about everything you need to know about cruising to Bermuda.

http://www.rccbermuda.bm/Documents/B...to_bermuda.pdf

It is strongly recommended that you file yacht, crew and safety equipment information before you go. You can do that here:

Visiting Yachts

There's a load of valuable information on the RCCBermuda website. Bermuda is exceptionally organized in terms of accommodating visiting yachts.

Bermuda Radio (ZBR) will contact you on VHF 16 as you approach the island to coordinate and give you permission to enter the harbour at St Georges. They will have been watching you approach on their radar.
