Navionics on Acer Laptop problems...

Navionics says that I can install the boating app on my laptop with Windows 8.1. When I try it says that my device is not supported and names my device as some Sprint something or other. When I go to the app store in Windows and type "Navionics" in the search bar, Navionics does not come up. Is there anyone that can help me with this issue?

Bret

I believe it was removed in 2015, with no plans to restore.

Not tried this myself, but there is an android emulator for windows that might (I do mean might) let you get it from Google play store.

Website says they removed the Windows app back in 2015. Not a complete substitute, but the WebApp has a lot of the same functionality as the phone/tablet based apps now: Navionics Webapp

I haven't looked into it but I am assuming that the webapp needs the web...
If that is the case, that won't work as we are in Mexico and Central America 9 months out of the year with very little internet access and certainly none when we are actually moving and in need of Navionics.

Why pay money for a product that isn't very good anyway? I installed OpenCPN on my Acer/windows laptop and it works great. And it's totally free. I use a USB GPS dongle that I got in a yard sale for $5. I'm sure you can find one on ebay.

I have Open CPN but just unfamiliar with it. Also I have a new Vesper AIS and was not sure if it integrates with Open CPN.

Bret:

The Vesper AIS outputs NMEA, so I'm sure it will integrate with OpenCPN. Someone down there can probably set you up with charts for Mexico and South. If you don't find any, contact me privately.

Why are you saying Navionics isn't very good? Why are you trashing it?

We have been using the vesper AIS feed to our laptop that runs OpenCPN for a number of years now. Perfect!

Ooo yeah, the webapp is not super helpful if you don't have internet, haha. I think iNavX has a windows version and you can download Navionics charts through that -- might be worth looking into.

You can try this one. It works on my surface book.

I tried Iboat, not sure if the same as iboating. It was 170ft off on both laptop and android phone. User interface was horrible. Tech support never answered multiple emails.

Re: Navionics on Acer Laptop problems...

Navionics has an app for iPhones, iPads, etc (through the apple store) and an app for android phones and tablets as well (through the google store). If you are trying to use the app on a laptop it will not work since support for it was discontinued.
We used Navionics throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean on our Android tablet (as well as the Navionics chip in our chartplotter) and it worked wonderfully. We downloaded the section of the chart that we needed next as we moved along the chain (you can download as much as you want but may be limited by the storage on your device).
By far, the app was the best investment we made on our trip. We lost electrical when we were approaching Rum Cay which, as you may know, is fraught with coral heads that are just below the surface. We HAD to have an accurate chart and RIGHT NOW!! Thankfully we had our tablet ready to go and the chart downloaded as well. We didn't have 10 seconds without a chartplotter because we seamlessly switched from the chartplotter that had lost power to the tablet.
For safety, having a backup GPS can be the difference in having a nice dinner on deck anchored safely in a calm anchorage and being grounded on a coral head taking on water.
