NAME: ARNHEM LAND
PURPOSE: To facilitate safe
navigation and to assist surveillance and patrol
operations.
SPONSOR: RAN (HQNORCOM)
IMPORTANCE:
Commercial: LOW
Defence: MED
Environmental: MED
SURVEY: This extensive area was previously progressed westwards by a
series of surveys that commenced in the vicinity of the Wessel
Islands in 1986/87. The
current programme now focused on the
western area between Cape Don and Croker Island. In the medium
term, efforts will also be concentrated on the approaches to
Maningrida and Milingimbi.
DESCRIPTION: Shallow depths (generally < 50m)
offshore with occasional reef and
shoal areas. Suitable for HS in
offshore areas with the inshore and
coastal areas suitable for SML and SMB operations. There is a risk
of grounding/sensor damage in shallow waters. The area is
conducive to undertaking detached
survey operations.
