Navagating System

Has anyone heard of Standard Horizon? We are looking to get a new system but can't afford the Best.

Yes popular in the UK. Standard Horizon seem to be doing well with their radios and chart plotters. We have a SH VHF hand held, very well made and probably the best available a couple of years ago when we bought it. Some of the Icom staff jumped ship to SH and took a lot of loyalty with them.

180 CP is a little small, the 300 series is better and seem to stand up to life on open boats very well.

However, having said all that we bought a Garmin chart plotter, which are first class

I am looking at the Standard Horizon plotter as an upgrade to the Navman I have now.
The Navman has C-Map wide, NT and all that so I can use it with my Navman chips. Navman, now Northstar is now using another chip I believe.

The price of the chips (whole of Caribbean and Australia) make it a good saving.

I have the Standard Horizon VHF handheld and thats fine...

We just purchased a Standard Horizon GX2100 VHF with built in AIS receiver.
Pretty sweet little unit.

Standard Horizon is a division of Vertex Standard. They make products under the names Standard Horizon, Vertex Standard, and Yaesu (amateur radio division).

Motorola acquired a controlling interest in Vertex Standard a couple of years ago.

Bottom line: it's a reliable company and, IMHO, makes very good products.

I'e had the opposite experience with Standard Horizon VHFs recently. I bought one a couple of years ago, and within 6 months the audio was gone--traded it in on an Icom.

3001 & GX2100

This year I fitted a 300i chart plotter and GX2100. They work together well and the AIS feature is a treat.

We have the VHF with remote mike and the 300 Chartplotter and had both on our previous boat. We liked them so much we installed them on our current trawler, Chuck

I got a CFP180 (combined chart plotter and fishfinder/sonar) for this season. Have logged just under 1000 nm with it this season and it by far outplays the Eagle 642 I use on my trolling boat. Itīs faster on startup and itīs by far more accurate (but that has more to do with Navionics charts for my part of the world being all but good). Itīs very easy to master: I only opened the manula to find out which wire to hook up to which, when connecting it with the VHF and the auto pilot. Maybe the 180 has a bit too small screen, but thatīs nothing I can blame SH for.. 5 inches is 5 inches, no matter manufacturer
