Missing Boats Threads
All these endless posts on the subject of missing boats. What self respecting skipper goes to sea, even on a day trip, without a fully functioning boat? I use my AIS, weather forecasting etc on every trip. My boat, a Hans Christian 38 has a life raft, MOB gear, SSB radio with a Pactor, two Epirbs, VHF (both fixed installation and two handhelds, working radar etc. etc.
Did I miss something?

Frankly, yes.
Not everyone has as much money as you do.
you can say "Then don't sail" all you want, but people will still do it.

Well like Raku said, everyone can't buy a Hans Christian and a full inventory of every electronic safety device available.
Plus you know what, no matter what boat you have, sometimes "stuff" happens. I can think of a dozen scenarios that would leave you little or no time to use your electronics to call for help.

Yes. To echo the above comment, not everyone has the resources to have backups to all of their safety equipment, and not everyone has the experience to to compensate for that.

Grain de Soleil had an EPIRB, which was activated . . . and still they were never found.

Yes Bazzer mybe a DREAM as other have said not everyone has money,& around here if you hit a whale all the stuff you carry if you give him a headache & he hits back you aint got time for all your stuff they aint going to find you.

 Darn, I just don't know how Connie and the kid's and I sailed all those miles before a lot of the stuff your so in love with, was even available !! I guess we should have lived ashore where it's safe LOL Come on Bazzer, theres all kinds of folks sailing pretty safely without spending all there money on electronic stuff that has a real chance of going tits up at the most terrible times !! Maybe ya should talk to some folks sailing all over the place without the things you would not even leave the dock without !! You might find that your one of the lucky folks with a lot of extra boat bucks to spend on things that are not really nessary to sail safely !! Just my 2 cents

Actually I don't have a lot of bucks to spend. Of course you can sail very many miles without safety equipment, but when push comes to shove the prudent skipper is the one I want to sail with.

Lots of folks go to sea unprepared. Mostly out of ignorance or a great deal of ego and sometimes over-confidence. My first transpacific was done without a lot of what you mentioned and in an old wooden boat. Mostly because the majority of stuff you mentioned hadn't been invented yet and satnav was too costly. I did have Zenith Oceanic for time ticks and BBC news and weather report. I had a VHF. I used a sextant with charts. I even had a liferaft and a radar reflector.
As has been noted. Even with all the new electronics folks can and do get in trouble. Ocean crossings can be hazardous. Sailing is not always completely safe.
You know all this stuff and its nice to have a nice boat and all the new gear plus backups but, really, even you could get into trouble.

In that picture: are you having a garage sale on the aft deck? That mess is risky in my opinion. I would not cast off the lines until that flea market was stowed below. Even for a Sunday sail.
I would go to sea without electronics before going like that ... So our opinions vary considerably about what makes a safe seaworthy boat.
