A minimal system/single piece of gear....I guess your brain, everything else is just auxiliaries. which one you will choose is up to you, and how much you wont to get involved in navigation. no one can help you to choose "minimal system"
someone is quite happy with one chart and/or hand held gps another one wont latest gizmos.
i am quite happy doing this....do not need any electronics

All but the app so far. Needed a HH VHF anyhoo so popped for the $300 ICOM with GPS. I figured a new expensive one might have some features I will grow into with my big boy pants. When and if that is.

Now when I call the bartender bridge tender, I can tell him/her precisely where I'll be waiting for the x#$%^& bridge to open.

One nice thing about having an accurate position on the ICW is knowing when you get to an area you can sail.


I can't sing the praises of modern day tablets enough. I have a Raymarine C70 for radar and a Garmin 541S mounted at the helm. Although both function a plotter my Ipad blows them away for functionality and ease of use.

Without a cellular contract it is a great tool. Equipment manuals, camera, inexpensive navigation software, charts you can zoom. With cellular you get news, weather, email, limited AIS, marina info, fuel docks .....the list just goes on an on.

I don't know the Android tablets but the IPad is super simple to learn and one my most used tools.

I think Crab will do just fine. There is something rewarding about going minimalist. Makes you more alert too.
